Celebrating a Quarter Century of Creativity and Connection

Art4Healing®: 25 Years of Exploring Emotions with Abstract Art

Art & Creativity for Healing (Art4Healing®) is celebrating an incredible milestone – 25 years of empowering individuals to transform their pain into creative expression. Over the past quarter-century, Art4Healing® has become a beacon of hope for countless individuals, providing a safe space to explore emotions and discover the healing power of art. From its humble beginnings to its global impact today, this journey is one worth celebrating.

The story of Art4Healing® begins with its visionary founder, Laurie Zagon. As a New York-based artist and university professor, Laurie’s work initially focused on teaching art to students and corporate executives. But she soon realized the profound impact abstract art could have on emotional well-being. Through creative exercises that removed the pressure of perfection, Laurie introduced participants to a new way of processing emotions. This discovery became the foundation of the Art4Healing® methodology, which remains at the heart of the organization’s mission today.

Over the years, Art4Healing® has grown far beyond its origins. What started as a single vision has expanded into a global movement, with partnerships spanning over 40 non-profit organizations and 26 ACCESS schools across Southern California. Thousands of workshops have been conducted, offering participants an opportunity to express grief, fear, and joy through abstract color on canvas. From veterans and teens to children and caregivers, Art4Healing® has touched lives across all demographics, creating spaces for emotional release and personal growth.

In addition to its workshops, Art4Healing® offers the International Certification Program, a unique initiative that trains facilitators to bring this methodology to their own communities. Graduates of the program have introduced Art4Healing® to participants from around the globe, including Abu Dhabi, Canada, New Zealand, and Switzerland. This ripple effect has ensured that Laurie’s initial vision continues to thrive and evolve.

This past year alone, Art4Healing® achieved remarkable milestones. Through partnerships with 41 organizations, the team facilitated over 4000 workshops and distributed more than 1,500 Healing Art Boxes and Bags. Each box, filled with art supplies and guided exercises, provided individuals in need with a creative outlet to explore their emotions and find moments of reflection, joy, and peace. These achievements exemplify the organization’s ongoing commitment to bringing healing through art to as many people as possible.

As Art4Healing® enters its 25th year, the organization reflects on the incredible impact made possible by its donors, facilitators, board members, and volunteers. Their unwavering dedication has been the driving force behind every success. The smiles captured during workshops, the heartfelt testimonials from participants, and the vibrant canvases of color are testaments to the transformative power of this work.

Looking to the future, Art4Healing® is more determined than ever to expand its reach. With new initiatives on the horizon and a steadfast commitment to its mission, the organization is poised to continue changing lives for years to come. As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to join us – whether as a donor, volunteer, or participant. Together, we can create a brighter, more healing world through the universal language of art.
